Manacles - Good Reading Guide

chosen by Maryanne Dever

A remarkable small-press offering that deserves a wider audience. This novel is a contemporary portrait of the artist which questions the very notions of art and writing. It calls into question, humorously and imaginatively, the processes of its own production: the author struggles with his own often uncooperative characters and with an increasingly confusing plot. Meanwhile Brisbane burns and a killer bus is on the loose... A cult novel for those in the know.

Born in Brisbane in 1955, Robert Whyte lived in Melbourne in the 1980s. Now researching the Ern Malley affair at Griffith University. Other published works include Negative Thinking (Planet Press 1978) and, under the pseudonym 'Robot Wireless', From Inside the Asylum (Brou Ha 1980). Edited the magazines Myopia (1972) and Colt.
